Sanctuary Birds and Sponsorships

We have many sanctuary birds, which are those who need extra medical care or wouldn’t fare well in a home. These birds are kept here under rare circumstances and many of them are pairs that bonded here, who are too aggressive for the average keeper. Some are program birds who assist with public education.

Sponsorships include regular updates on your specific bird.

Please use this form to send in your donation. If you’d like to be listed here as a sponsor, please email us and let us know who you sent your donation for, and so we have a place to send updates monthly. Thank you so much!!

Rojo greenwing arrived in October of 2017 from Texas. She lost her lifelong partner of 50 years in 2022 and is learning how to live without Uve. She’s spoiled with snuggles every day and enjoys sunshine in the aviary. Rojo requires twice daily medication and extra fat in her diet. She’s one of our permanent residents due to medical reasons. Rojo has extensive arthritis in her wings and feet, appearing curled. She needs adaptations in her cage because of this and careful handling. She also has chronic aspergillosis and an enlarged heart.. likely from atherosclerosis. Her owner was involved in researching the declining population of Lear’s Macaws in the 1990’s. Read more about Judith Hart here!

Holly and Trudee are a bonded mother-daughter pair of Cherry-head Conures who live their lives free flighted and ruling the Conure Condo (don’t tell Timot, though-he believes he is the boss but really it’s Trudee). These two came to us back in 2013, completely untame and having only lived in an aviary setup for breeding purposes. The owner cared for them, but developed bird fancier’s lung disease. Trudee was just 3 years old, but Holly was the woman’s last breeding bird and at the time already 14 years old. Holly remains the matriarch in the free flight aviary here and she’ll likely live out the rest of her life free until she loses her ability to fly. These girls pretty much get whatever they want, enjoy their healthy diet, and like to go visiting other birds. Newcomers have come and gone in the conure condo, but these two remain here long term.

Holly & Trudee can be sponsored for $35 a month.

Teegan is an interesting bird. He is a Triton cockatoo with a long history of aggression towards people and birds. Because of this, finding him a home is like finding a unicorn in a pool. It really doesn’t happen. Now, he did find a home in 2017 where he and his owner were VERY happy but the owner passed away and Teegan was forced to return to us. Since then, he hasn’t been able to find his unicorn again. Being a large male cockatoo, he needs tons of interaction and constant toy changes. He will always need this level of care and we hope to find that for him again someday. For now, the upkeep on Teegan is significant.

Teegan can be sponsored for $75 a month.

Rocco is a boisterous blue and gold macaw. He is available for adoption, but is a long term resident that requires a special circumstance to find a home. He’s now lost TWO long term mates and has a hard time trusting people. Once he does decide you’re okay, he may step up on his terms only but has never accepted head pets on a normal basis. Rocco loves to make noise, run around his perches, banging things around, throwing his food, and chewing everything apart. Basically, he acts like a wild macaw! Since Bubba has been gone, he’s back to living on a tree in hopes of working on taming him down a bit more. We love caring for him here, but long term/semi permanent residents like this cost quite a bit to keep up with.

*10/29/2025 Update: Bubba (pictured left) suffered an injury to his right wing in the early morning hours of 10/28. He was stabilized and spent the night in our ICU on pain meds, heat, and O2 and was comfortable. The next day he went to the vet and was scheduled for surgery that night as scans showed he had unfortunately suffered an open fracture to his distal carpal as well as severe tissue damage that was not able to be fixed conservatively, and required partial amputation. While being prepped for surgery, he silently slipped away from us and passed away. We miss him dearly as he was a long term member of the flock here at IPR. Bubba’s Memorial Post*

Bilbo Greenwing arrived in 2014, and by all stretches of the imagination she was clinically depressed. She didn’t know what a toy was and lived in a cage so cramped she could hardly turn around. Bilbo still doesn’t play with toys that much, but she loves her boing and chews on perches now. She often flaps her wings about and plays peekaboo with anyone that walks by. She is quick with a greeting, but protective and picky about her favorite people. When she decides you’re okay, you’ve got a friend for life. Bilbo enjoys being one of our ambassador birds for presentations.

Timot is a very recognizable cherry head. Anybody who’s been here knows he likes his oatmeal containers and ruling the Conure Condo! Timot arrived in July of 2007 with a plucking problem and some fears. He can be super sweet, but decided he’d rather live wild as a free flight aviary bird, so we’ve allowed him to do what he wants and he is one of our 5 permanent residents. Timot still thinks Mike belongs to him, and will sit on his or Sarah’s shoulders when he thinks he’s gonna be getting a treat or attention. In addition to financial sponsorship, we are accepting donations of empty round oatmeal tubs. He can’t live without them and our regular source ran out. Thankfully, we supplement him with miscellaneous boxes to satisfy his urges and making our “stash” last!

Sponsor Timot for $20 a month.

~~~Alumni~~~ Tyson and Hercules are a newly bonded pair. Tyson has a sad backstory, including being sold at an unethical exotics auction with no history and losing his partner, Pearl, early 2024. Hercules has lived a pretty normal life, except poor diet and genetics led to his vision loss and almost complete blindness at only 35 years old. These two are another pair that are technically available for adoption but are unlikely to find a home any time soon, due to neither of them being hand tame and both special needs. These two live happily together now and preen each other all day. They have arthritis and need regular monitoring from the vet. Herkie gets some minor adjustments to his cage to allow easier movement and adjustments, as well as chiropractic care.
ADOPTED 9/16/2025
Marley and Durango came separately, as many of our now bonded pairs did. Neither have liked people before, so it was a blessing they found each other. They need a large aviary/large cage where they can behave in whatever ways they please and are available for adoption. Most people cannot handle two large, aggressive macaws who are strongly bonded to each other so they live here until they find their very special person. Durango has some minor vision issues, a cataract in his left eye, which we don’t feel really affects his vision too much. They love to chew up toys often and both will regularly occupy their swing… Sometimes they even squeeze into the swing together in a heartwarming display of affection.
Marley and Durango are available for sponsorship for $100 a month.
Rocky is a very rambunctious hybrid Ruby macaw, which is a mix of greenwing and scarlet. He is super entertaining, but extremely protective of his stuff and would love nothing more than to find a place where he can be supervised and allowed to do his own thing. Rocky requires much upkeep, as he is a super-chewer and has been known to regularly dismantle his own living arrangements. A few years ago, Rocky broke his tibia and needs to be monitored now and then to ensure there isn’t any long term damage associated with the accident. Besides this minor concern, he is healthy but will likely be with us for a long time due to his temperament issues. He loves to chat and blow kisses, but offers his foot for a step up then bites… regularly. To him, it’s a game, and we have to explain this to people new to his antics OFTEN. We do see this problem a lot in hybrid macaws.
*6/1/2025 update: Unfortunately, Zazu Ruby (pictured left) passed away at the vet’s office on May 27th. He had been ill for a bit over a week, very lethargic and intensely skinny. He was eating and drinking well and seemed to be stable/gaining some weight, but we brought him in for an urgent recheck after he had a few seizures, and discovered all the weight was fluid accumulating in his proventriculus and heart. Sadly, it was recommended to have him euthanized as his quality of life would decline. Zazu was a cherished member of his flock, no matter how sassy he got, and we will always remember him.
