TUFFY
Tuffy is a 27 year old male Yellow-nape. He can be super snuggly when he has you alone, but like most amazons there is the occasional oops bite. He becomes aggressive when he is around other birds so he will need to be in a single bird home. Tuffy is very territorial of his cage. He loves women and his favorite thing is his morning head scratch followed by a cashew. He’s been known to ring out a “hello” while raising his foot in the air and look for his favorite person. He is a good toy chewer, has his fits of rage out on his metal spoon toy, takes his daily naps at the same time as Baby YNA, and always has his eye on you. If you’re doing something, he thinks he should also be a part of that.

PONGO
Pongo is a male blue-front of unknown age, it’s likely he is on the older side though. His partner Nemo needed daily medications and handling, so ended up separated. They have both adapted very well to being apart and they seem to want to stay separated long term.
Pongo is not tame, will step on a stick. He lived in an outside aviary for most of the year in his previous home and really thrives when he has lots of room to climb and fly. He's a fairly laid back bird who doesn't really have much interest in being tame with people. He is very quiet and enjoys being in a home with other birds, though.

PICKLES
Pickles is a 31 year old male Blue-Front Amazon. He was adopted in 2018 after only a week of being here because he was not doing well at the rescue. He came from an awful home originally and was never treated right, which meant Pickles became extremely neurotic. He doesn’t like new toys, perches, and is picky about his food. He has a few things that we know he does well with, but change in general is tough for him. He’s never really been handleable though he likes other birds and learned to eat new foods by watching them. Pickles would be fine for most homes with the understanding that he will only be touched on his terms and his environment will need to remain very stable. He enjoys a scratch on his head, likes to talk, LOVES a warm bath, and will be a great low maintenance companion for other birds.

BIKO
Biko is an assumed male Yellow-Crowned Amazon around 19 years old. Yellow-crowns aren’t rare, but are certainly a less common species here. They are very similar to Yellow-napes in size and personality. Biko has a lot of potential for handling with care and clearly has a preference for men. We were told he may not want to be handled by women and we don’t believe he will go out of his way to be rude, but he’s decided women are almost always bitten. He is an excellent flier and appears to be in great shape… After being here a while, he doesn’t care for the other birds either but again hasn’t gone out of his way to be rude. He might be one of those “look don’t touch” birds, or handleable under certain circumstances by someone with experience.

MAX
Max is a 25 year old male Double Yellow Head who was recently returned. He has a history of aggression, but has been worked with extensively and now has far less frequent outbursts. He needs to go to someone who understands Amazon behaviors and isn’t afraid of them. Max really loves kids and bonded heavily to the youngest in his home, doesn’t have much of a gender bias… But is choosy about who he likes. He’d ideally not go to a home with kids under 8 though for their safety. He’s pretty used to living with other birds now and seems to like the noises/talking to other Amazons, but can be a cage traveler. He enjoys following you around and chasing feet. Max WILL NOT be comfortable stepping onto a hand but is very happy to step onto a stick. He wasn’t handled much in his past but the stick made him feel safe. He likes attention and to chat, and is a medium to high energy level bird. He will be a lot of fun but a bit of a challenge for someone with a bit of experience behind them.

NEMO
Nemo is a male Southern Mealy of unknown age though it’s likely he is on the older side. Nemo has been in MANY homes (8+) in his life and really deserves a final place to live out his days in happiness. He and Pongo came in cage mates but are currently in separate cages since Nemo needed daily medications and handling. They have both adapted very well to being apart and they seem to want to stay separated long term. Nemo will step on a stick and get pets when he feels like it. So far he has been stepping onto our hands quite nicely, as long as you're not trying to pull him away from something he really wants. He used to live in an outside aviary for most of the year in his previous home. One thing to note is that he can be incredibly noisy. If something busy happens, he tends to start whining. Nemo totally loves baths, though, and that can calm him down some. The outside aviary gets him talking and saying hello, and calms him down. It’s definitely his happy place.

BABY
Baby is a 14 year old male Yellow-nape Amazon. He is typically pretty scared at first meeting and doesn't adapt to new situations well. Over time he’s become much more friendly, enjoys talking a bit and having his head scratched when he gets to know you. He can be bribed with almonds! When he was a baby, something spooked him and he became skittish after that point. He doesn't seem to care about other birds much but we think being around others would be good for him for his confidence. We’ve recently discovered that he WILL bite toes when other birds land on his cage though, so while the actual presence of birds is good for his socialization, physically being on his cage makes him feel really insecure and protective and could put another bird at risk. He really just needs a quiet home with someone dedicated to bringing him out of his shell. He’s an unpolished gem who needs a lot of patience and a vision.

SAMMY
Sammy is a 40 year old assumed male Double Yellow Head whose favorite person passed away, leaving him a bit difficult to handle for the current owner. He has always preferred men and has been a bit aggressive towards certain people before. It’s not really uncommon to see in this species. Sammy has never been around other birds until now and seems to get a little worked up around them, but hasn’t been aggressive with anybody. He shows a very clear preference for men still, often lighting up and talking more when they come around. He will accept treats very gently from anybody and talk a little for most people, but is pretty standoffish. He’s afraid of a stick and slightly nervous about a hand, but would rather run away than bite. We think he’s just gotta take it slow and form a connection over time. He really loves to be out of his cage and will only fly if he deems it necessary. He’s pretty lazy. He is a great toy chewer and loves wood blocks, so keeping him busy isn’t a challenge! We think Sammy is a gem for a man with plenty of time and dedication.

ZAZU aka KIPPERS
aka meatball aka roly poly
Zazu came here after his owner was unable to physically care for him anymore. We don’t yet know if he is a boy or girl, or how old he is. We DO know he is a wildcaught Yellow-Nape Amazon, probably from Honduras. He also has a pretty bad feather destructive habit and had chewed off his entire tail and wing feathers. Thankfully he’s regrown his tail since being here. Zazu seems to like particular people and enjoys really nice head scratches. He hadn’t had a bath before coming here but discovered he LOVES them. He also can step on a stick very nicely, and does know how to step on a hand, but may bite if he feels insecure. His balance isn’t great but is improving over time. Zaz loves to talk and sing, sometimes just yelling for fun. Unfortunately with minimal history, it’s hard to say how he is in a home but he’s really a little bundle of joy here. The people he dislikes, he dislikes with a passion and WILL bite hard with little warning. There seems to be a slight preference for women but only slight. He chooses pretty quickly if he likes someone or not and he’s picky about where to approach him in his cage (territorial). He just needs to be taught he is safe and we think he will blossom.
He’s been to education events with us and done pretty well, likes to be the life of the party, and handles stepping onto a stick really well. If he doesn’t like who is on the end of the stick… Well, he may run up it to bite you. Sorry. Zazu is a really classic fiery male Amazon who just wants his opinion known, okay?! There is one thing we know for certain and that is he is nothing short of entertaining. He probably shouldn’t be around smaller birds though, as these big boys can be extremely unpredictable and are capable of seriously injuring birds smaller than themselves. Held with caution, Zazu will make a really entertaining companion for someone with some experience behind them.

JUBILEE
Jubilee is a fabulous middle-aged male Red-Lored Amazon who was recently returned. Jubee came with zero history, including no information on his age-the only thing we knew was he has some minor plucking issues, flaky feet, and a really super crappy diet. His owner had him for decades and thought he might be a wildcaught (smuggled) bird. His charming and loving personality got him adopted so quickly he didn’t even make it onto the website, but unfortunately it was discovered in the home that he is quite violent towards other birds and would do best in a home where he is either kept completely separate from others (different rooms) or with no other birds. In the short time he was adopted, his owner was able to help transition him to a better diet and improve his plucking a little, so we know it’s possible to continue this positive trend. With this accommodation of no to few other birds, we know Jubilee will SHINE and liven up your life with his fabulous little words of affirmation and bold tail flares. He’s got a heart of gold and is ready to jump into your arms for some chin rubs (his favorite). He’s even been medically cleared already so is geared up and ready to go.

PAPA
Papa is a Blue-front Amazon, at least 35 years old, who has been with us since 2015. He really doesn’t enjoy being touched and will pretty regularly lunge at people he doesn’t like. He can talk a little but only when he is very worked up. Over the years he has had a few partners, who have either broken up with him or passed away. He enjoys the companionship of other birds and would be happy being left alone in a large cage. He really likes to say “hi” when he’s in a spicy mood and flares his tail a LOT, which is quite the sight! He has a little beak spike which gets trimmed down now a couple times a year for maintenance.
