Fixer-Uppers

  • TUFFY

Tuffy is a 27 year old male Yellow-nape. He can be super snuggly when he has you alone, but like most amazons there is the occasional oops bite. He becomes aggressive when he is around other birds so he will need to be in a single bird home. Tuffy is very territorial of his cage.

  • PONGO

Pongo is a male blue-front of unknown age, it’s likely he is on the older side though. His partner Nemo needed daily medications and handling, so ended up separated. They have both adapted very well to being apart and they seem to want to stay separated long term.

Pongo is not tame, will step on a stick. He lived in an outside aviary for most of the year in his previous home and really thrives when he has lots of room to climb and fly. He's a fairly laid back bird who doesn't really have much interest in being tame with people. He is very quiet and enjoys being in a home with other birds, though.

  • PICKLES

Pickles is a 31 year old male Blue-Front Amazon. He was adopted in 2018 after only a week of being here because he was not doing well at the rescue. He came from an awful home originally and was never treated right, which meant Pickles became extremely neurotic. He doesn’t like new toys, perches, and is picky about his food. He has a few things that we know he does well with, but change in general is tough for him. He’s never really been handleable though he likes other birds and learned to eat new foods by watching them. Pickles would be fine for most homes with the understanding that he will only be touched on his terms and his environment will need to remain very stable. He enjoys a scratch on his head, likes to talk, LOVES a warm bath, and will be a great low maintenance companion for other birds.

  • BIKO

Biko is an assumed male Yellow-Crowned Amazon around 19 years old. Yellow-crowns aren’t rare, but are certainly a less common species here. They are very similar to Yellow-napes in size and personality. Biko just arrived, and but is pretty adaptable so far. He’s got a lot of potential for handling with care and clearly has a preference for men. We were told he may not want to be handled by women and we don’t believe he will go out of his way to be rude, but he’s decided women are almost always bitten. He is an excellent flier and appears to be in great shape.

WALLFLOWERS

  • TYSON & HERCULES

Tyson is an older male red-lored amazon. We don’t have much history on him, only that he was purchased in 2021 at an auction in Missouri as an “old breeding pair” with his now passed partner, Pearl. We don’t know his age and he is not particularly tame. Hercules is a male Orange Wing Amazon around 35 years old.

After losing his partner early 2023, Tyson had a long grieving process and became rather depressed. Just recently, he accepted Hercules as his mate and they have become incredibly sweet together. Tyson likes to talk, whistle, and sing, and Hercules likes to scream into the void when he’s in the mood. Neither are particularly tame-though Herkie can step onto a stick pretty easily. He used to be hand tame but has now lost most of his vision and tends to bite at random shadows, meaning he’s too unpredictable to hold confidently. Tyson CAN step onto a stick, but would rather run away. He needs a lot of work on that.

This lovely pair are great birds that want to show someone that, and have never really had the chance to get the attention they should have all these years.

    Special needs, Hercules is BLIND

  • NEMO

Nemo is a male Southern Mealy of unknown age though it’s likely he is on the older side. Nemo has been in MANY homes in his life and really deserves a final place to live out his days in happiness. He and Pongo came in cage mates but are currently in separate cages since Nemo needed daily medications and handling. They have both adapted very well to being apart and they seem to want to stay separated long term. Nemo will step on a stick and get pets when he feels like it. So far he has been stepping onto our hands quite nicely, as long as you're not trying to pull him away from something he really wants. He used to live in an outside aviary for most of the year in his previous home. One thing to note is that he can be incredibly noisy. If something busy happens, he tends to start whining. Nemo totally loves baths, though, and that can calm him down some.

  • BABY

Baby is a 14 year old male Yellow-nape Amazon. We are still evaluating him, but he is typically extremely scared at first meeting and doesn't adapt to new situations well. Over time he’s become much more friendly, enjoys talking a bit and having his head scratched. When he was a baby, something spooked him and he became skittish after that point. He doesn't seem to care about other birds much but we think being around others would be good for him for his confidence. We’ve recently discovered that he WILL bite toes when other birds land on his cage. He really just needs a quiet home with someone dedicated to bringing him out of his shell.

CUDDLEBUGS

  • KIPPERS fka Zazu

    aka meatball aka roly poly

Kippers came here after his owner was unable to physically care for him anymore. We don’t yet know if Kippers is a boy or girl, or how old he is. We DO know he is a wildcaught Yellow-Nape Amazon, probably from Honduras. He also has a pretty bad feather destructive habit and has chewed off his entire tail and wing feathers. So far, Kippers seems to like particular people and enjoys really nice head scratches. He hadn’t had a bath before coming here but discovered he LOVES them. He also can step on a stick very nicely, but is currently shying from stepping onto a hand. If he doesn’t like who is holding the stick, he may inch closer to sneak in a bite. Kip loves to talk and sing, sometimes just yelling for fun. Unfortunately with minimal history, it’s hard to say how he is in a home but so far he’s a little bundle of joy here. The people he dislikes he dislikes with a passion and WILL bite hard with little warning. With all other people, he seems totally fine. He just needs to be taught he is safe and we think he will blossom.

WILDLINGS

  • BOGEY & PAPA

Bogey and Papa are two longer term resident male Amazons. Bogey is a 24 year old Double Yellow-Head (tres marias) and Papa is a Blue-Front over 35 years old. They both want to stay wild and have just shacked up with each other, so still trying to figure out the dynamic. They both prefer not to be touched, but Bogey is a bit gentler than Papa since pairing up and can be handled by men only. They’d do best somewhere they can just be watched and live as unhandleable birds.

  • PAPA
